A woman from Worksop, Nottinghamshire, is preparing to represent Great Britain at an international sled dog racing competition in Sweden. Danielle Marshall, 32, will participate in the International Federation of Sleddog Sports Dryland European Championships, scheduled to take place between 14 and 18 October.
Ms Marshall qualified for the international event after winning silver in the British Sleddog Sports Federation national championships for the 2025-26 season. She competed in both the four-dog rig and two-dog scooter events.
She will race in the 5.5km (3.4 mile) two-dog scooter race and the 4.5km (2.8 mile) four-dog rig race. Each event is run twice, with the fastest overall racer and dogs winning.
Ms Marshall, who works a 9-5 office job, is self-funded and will drive herself and her dogs from Worksop to Gävle, Sweden. Her coach, Vickie Pullin, stated that the sport is not recognised by the UK government, meaning athletes are not eligible for state funding, despite competing against paid professionals.
Ms Marshall began the sport, also known as dry-land mushing, after getting her husky cross puppy, Luna, in 2020. She now trains a team of dogs, including six-year-old Siri, three-year-old Moose, and four-year-old Willow, for 12 hours weekly in Nottinghamshire's forests.
