Nscale appoints former OpenAI executive Fidji Simo to its board

UK-based AI data centre startup Nscale has appointed Fidji Simo, formerly a top executive at OpenAI, to its board of directors. Simo's appointment comes ahead of Nscale's anticipated initial public offering (IPO) this autumn.

  • Fidji Simo, former CEO of AGI Deployment at OpenAI, has joined Nscale's board.
  • Simo previously led Instacart through its IPO in 2023.
  • Nscale is reportedly seeking to raise up to $3.5 billion ahead of a planned IPO.

Nscale, a UK-based AI data centre startup, has announced the appointment of Fidji Simo to its board of directors. Simo, who previously served as CEO of AGI Deployment at OpenAI, left the company in July for health reasons but continues to advise it part-time.

Her experience includes leading Instacart through its IPO in 2023 as its chair and CEO, and over a decade at Meta, where she was head of the Facebook app. Simo also sits on Shopify's board.

Nscale founder and CEO Josh Payne stated that Simo brings an understanding of scaling products used by billions and the demands placed on underlying systems. Simo joins other high-profile executives on Nscale's board, including Sheryl Sandberg, Susan Decker, and Nick Clegg.

The appointment precedes Nscale's anticipated IPO this autumn. The startup, founded two years ago, designs, builds, and operates AI data centres. It is reportedly attempting to raise up to $3.5 billion ahead of its planned IPO, according to a Bloomberg report last week citing unnamed sources.

Why this matters: The appointment of a high-profile executive with experience in leading companies through IPOs and scaling large platforms could be significant for Nscale as it prepares for its own public offering.
