Nurse Struck Off After Falsely Linking Covid Jab to Patient's Cancer

A nurse has been removed from the professional register after telling a vulnerable patient that their Covid-19 vaccination caused their cancer. The Nursing and Midwifery Council found four out of six charges of misconduct proven, including unauthorised access to patient records.

  • Nurse Penny Senner was struck off the register by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
  • She told a patient undergoing chemotherapy that their Covid-19 vaccine caused their cancer.
  • Senner also accessed 'numerous' patient records without authorisation or clinical reason.
  • The NMC panel found her actions caused 'lasting emotional and psychological harm' to the patient.

A nurse's devastating remarks to a vulnerable cancer patient have led to her being permanently removed from the profession after she falsely linked the Covid-19 vaccination to the patient's illness. Penny Senner, who used to work for Dorset Healthcare University NHS Foundation Trust, faced a Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) hearing where four out of six charges against her were proven.

The patient, referred to as Patient A, recalled how Senner brought up the topic of Covid jabs during a routine appointment in August 2023. After confirming she had received vaccinations and boosters, Patient A stated Senner explicitly claimed, "that's what caused your cancer" – a statement that was presented as definitive rather than speculative. This happened at a time when Patient A was undergoing chemotherapy, leaving her feeling extremely vulnerable.

The NMC hearing also uncovered evidence that Senner had accessed the confidential records of numerous patients without proper authorisation or justification, starting shortly after the Covid-19 vaccine rollout began. She compiled a list of these patients, citing "research" as her reason for accessing their files.

Although the NMC panel accepted that Senner did not intentionally cause harm to Patient A, it concluded that her actions resulted in "lasting emotional and psychological distress." The panel noted that Senner failed to behave professionally or with kindness towards Patient A and did not acknowledge her vulnerability. Dawn Dawson, Dorset HealthCare's chief nursing officer, confirmed that Senner was immediately suspended upon discovery of her actions and no longer works for the trust, welcoming the NMC's decision.

This case highlights the significance of upholding public trust in healthcare professionals and public health advice. The NHS continually stresses that millions of vaccinations are administered annually, playing a crucial role in safeguarding the public from serious illnesses. Unauthorised access to patient records is also a grave breach of confidentiality and professional conduct, with strict guidelines in place to protect sensitive information.

Why this matters: This case highlights the serious consequences for healthcare professionals who spread misinformation and breach patient confidentiality. It reinforces the NHS's commitment to patient safety and the integrity of medical advice.

What this means for you: What this means for you: This case reaffirms the professional standards expected of NHS staff and the robust regulatory processes in place to address misconduct, ensuring patient safety and trust in healthcare services. If you have concerns about your health, always consult your GP or call NHS 111.
