Nvidia announced on Monday its intention to invest $1.5 billion in SB Energy, a data centre developer with links to SoftBank and OpenAI. This investment will secure Nvidia's position as the sole supplier of compute infrastructure for OpenAI's Ports-Pike data centre, located near Cincinnati, Ohio.
Nvidia will also provide up to $105 billion in credit to support the construction of the facility. The data centre is projected to scale from an initial 4.25 gigawatts to 8 gigawatts in size, according to documents filed with the SEC.
SB Energy, whose existing investors include SoftBank and OpenAI, plans to construct a 9.2 gigawatt natural gas power plant on the site. This land is owned by the U.S. Department of Energy and was previously used for uranium enrichment. The power plant is anticipated to cost $33 billion, a sum reflecting a 66% increase in natural gas power plant construction costs over the last two years, as reported by BloombergNEF.
