Former US President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle Obama have unveiled their production company, Higher Ground, will be collaborating with Disney on an original animated fantasy series. This new partnership with Disney's Kids & Family arm comes after the conclusion of Higher Ground's significant eight-year first-look deal with streaming giant Netflix in April.
The upcoming series, currently titled 'Journey', is being created and executive produced by Matt Munn, known for his work on films such as 'Ice Age: Collision Course' and 'Spies in Disguise'. The narrative centres on a character named Journey, who ventures into forbidden territories to uncover the truth behind her father's disappearance, ultimately discovering a powerful magical ability within herself.
Ayo Davis, President of Disney Kids & Family, highlighted the show's resonance with Disney's core values, stating that 'Journey' is an "epic adventure anchored by a remarkable young heroine whose courage inspires those around her." She added that the story explores universal themes of resilience, self-discovery, and the power of believing in something greater than oneself, themes that have historically defined Disney's storytelling.
Jessie Dicovitsky, Head of Television at Higher Ground, expressed pride in the partnership, noting that 'Journey' is a "true original that takes bold swings" by combining adventure, imagination, and music. She emphasised Higher Ground's commitment to delivering engaging and meaningful stories for children and families, building upon their established reputation.
Established in 2018, Higher Ground has a notable track record, including the Oscar and Emmy-winning documentary 'American Factory', along with Oscar-nominated films 'Rustin', 'American Symphony', and 'Crip Camp'. During their tenure with Netflix, the company also produced several films, such as the 2023 apocalyptic thriller 'Leave the World Behind', featuring Julia Roberts and Ethan Hawke. The Obamas also co-produced their first Broadway play earlier this year, a revival of David Auburn's Pulitzer Prize-winning 'Proof'.
