Ireland's Kate O'Connor is in pole position for heptathlon gold at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, with only the 800m event remaining. The 25-year-old, a Commonwealth Games gold medallist, accumulated 5812 points after a personal best long jump of 6.55m and a javelin throw of 50.16.
O'Connor is currently 51 points ahead of Netherlands' Emma Oosterwegel, who has 5761 points, with Sofie Dokter, also from the Netherlands, in third with 5741 points. Poland's Adrianna Sulek-Schubert, the overnight leader, dropped to seventh place after a challenging start to Saturday.
Meanwhile, Great Britain's Katarina Johnson-Thompson is out of contention for a medal, sitting in 19th place, 780 points behind O'Connor. Her struggles continued with a 5.77m long jump and a 36.92m javelin throw. GB team-mate Jade O'Dowda is in 13th place.
In other events, Great Britain's Amy Hunt is bidding for her third gold medal in Birmingham, following victories in the 100m and 200m. She will compete in the women's 4x100m final alongside Dina Asher-Smith, who is seeking her seventh European gold overall. Georgia Hunter-Bell of Great Britain qualified for Sunday's women's 1500m final, while Ireland's Sarah Healy and Sophie O'Sullivan also advanced.
