An extraordinary example of dedication and commitment has been set by 80-year-old nurse Iva Hills, who continues to serve patients at Pilgrim Hospital in Boston, Lincolnshire. With an incredible 55 years in the nursing profession under her belt, Mrs Hills is a shining beacon of inspiration to her colleagues and patients alike.
Mrs Hills attributes her remarkable energy levels and good health to a positive outlook on life, crediting: "I'm very lucky to be healthy. Enjoy life and be very positive - that's my secret." She finds deep reward in assisting people, acknowledging the challenges of the job but focusing on the positive aspects is key, she believes.
Her nursing journey began with a diploma completed in Prague in 1963. After relocating to England in 1970, Mrs Hills undertook retraining to meet UK standards. Throughout her extensive career, she has worked across various wards, holding positions such as ward sister and matron for a decade before officially retiring in 2010.
Reflecting on the evolution of nursing over five and a half decades, Mrs Hills notes "massive" changes, particularly in mobilisation and mental health support. She highlights the increased complexity of patient diagnoses and the greater number of individuals requiring care today. Her approach involves lifting patients' spirits, believing that a positive mindset contributes significantly to their recovery and desire to return home.
The United Lincolnshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust has praised Mrs Hills, with colleagues describing her as "caring, compassionate, a role model, an inspiration, an educator and, above all, the nurse we would all like to be caring for our loved ones." Mrs Hills maintains her health through good nutrition, exercise, and a variety of hobbies, committed to continuing her work for as long as she feels capable and is permitted to do so.
