Ofsted has today, 22 September 2026, published its 18th annual report on the effectiveness of care, welfare, and training arrangements for recruits, trainees, and officer cadets in the Armed Forces. The report follows inspections conducted between October 2025 and April 2026.
Inspectors visited 10 regular training establishments and reviewed training in University Royal Naval Units (URNUs), including 6 university units and headquarters staff at Britannia Royal Naval College. This resulted in 11 overall judgments.
The report found that 4 establishments were judged outstanding, 6 were graded good, and 1 was judged as requiring improvement. No establishments were deemed inadequate. Overall training continues to be good, with commanding officers and teams showing a clear commitment to high-quality care and welfare support.
However, the report also highlighted that poor infrastructure and unsuitable kit remain a problem across too many of the establishments inspected, a concern that has been reported previously.
