Slovenia's Jakob Omrzel, aged 20, secured his first Grand Tour stage victory on Thursday, winning stage 12 of the Vuelta a España to Calar Alto. He attacked on the final ascent and finished almost two minutes ahead of Urko Berrade.
Meanwhile, Spain's Enric Mas extended his overall lead in the race. The Movistar rider broke away from a chasing group with approximately 13km remaining of the 166.6-km mountainous ride, finishing 27 seconds clear of Primoz Roglic.
Mas now leads Roglic by one minute and 45 seconds, with Felix Gall in third place at 2:06. Britain's Oscar Onley lost ground in the overall standings after a crash, finishing more than two minutes behind Mas.
In other cycling news, Tim Merlier won stage two of the Tour of Britain in Skegness. The 33-year-old sprinter dominated the finish of the 181km stage from Boston. Lewis Askey retained the overall leader's jersey.
