David Nicholls' beloved novel, One Day, is set to be reimagined for the West End stage as a musical this autumn. Following a successful debut at the Royal Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh earlier this year, One Day - The Musical will transfer to London's Garrick Theatre in November, offering audiences a new interpretation of the enduring love story.
The 2009 novel, which has sold over five million copies globally, has previously captivated audiences through a 2011 film adaptation starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess, and a 2024 television series on Netflix, which garnered significant popularity in the UK. This latest theatrical venture sees Jamie Muscato and Sharon Rose return to their roles as the central characters, Dexter and Emma, after their critically praised performances in Edinburgh.
The musical adaptation has been penned by David Greig, former artistic director of the Royal Lyceum, known for his work on productions such as Charlie And The Chocolate Factory and Touching The Void. The music and lyrics are a collaboration between Abner and Amanda, with additional material by Jeremy Sams. Directing the production is Tony and Olivier award nominee Max Webster, whose previous credits include acclaimed stagings of Macbeth with David Tennant and Cush Jumbo, and The Importance Of Being Earnest featuring Ncuti Gatwa.
The narrative of One Day centres on Emma Morley and Dexter Mayhew, who first meet on the night of their university graduation in 1988. The story then revisits them on the same day, July 15th, each year for two decades, charting the evolution of their complex relationship through moments of joy, heartbreak, missed opportunities, and second chances. Producers Melting Pot have hinted that the musical aims to capture the intensity of youthful romance and the defining moments that shape lives, alongside the enduring hope that love will ultimately prevail.
Jamie Muscato's extensive theatre background includes roles in Cabaret and Moulin Rouge!, while Sharon Rose has starred as Sylvia at the Old Vic Theatre and played Eliza Hamilton in the West End production of Lin-Manuel Miranda's Hamilton. Both actors bring considerable experience to these iconic roles. Tickets for One Day - The Musical are now on sale through the official production website.
