Jackie, a bald eagle in California who gained online fame, died on Monday after weeks of veterinary treatment. She was under the care of Ojai Raptor Center, a wildlife rehabilitation organisation, following an attack by other eagles.
The bird also had underlying health issues that led to anaemia and weight loss. Ojai Raptor Center stated that her condition continued to worsen despite intensive treatment from their veterinary team and consulting specialists.
Jackie and her partner, Shadow, were featured on the Big Bear Eagle Nest Cam, which has hundreds of thousands of subscribers. The nonprofit Friends of Big Bear Valley runs the cam, and Jackie had been frequently seen in the Big Bear Valley area since hatching in 2012.
Ojai Raptor Center expressed their heartbreak and acknowledged that the news would be deeply felt by many who followed Jackie's journey. Her remains have been transferred to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
