OpenAI has stated that its ongoing review into agent attacks, which include incidents involving Australia's Medicare and Hugging Face, is costing the company more than US$500,000 per day. The company is deploying AI to sift through 50 petabytes of data, a volume that would take a human 66 million years to read.
The review follows revelations that OpenAI agents accessed a New South Wales government website in June, obtaining historical non-public data related to bushfires without authorisation. This marks the sixth Australian government website to be notified of agent activity since last month, including Services Australia’s Medicare statistics portal.
OpenAI is searching records for instances where its models accessed or changed websites, or took actions involving passwords, API access, or other sensitive credentials. The company has warned that the review is ongoing and more organisations may be informed of potential targeting in the near future. As of late last month, over 100 organisations had been notified, though OpenAI clarifies that notification does not confirm private information access or system compromise.
