Organic Action Plan launched to boost English organic farming

The government has launched an Organic Action Plan for England, aiming to increase the share of agricultural land farmed organically and support farmers.

  • The Organic Action Plan for England was launched today by Environment Secretary Dame Angela Eagle.
  • The plan aims to increase the share of agricultural land farmed organically from around 3.4% towards 10% by 2036.
  • It focuses on supporting producers, aligning supply with demand, and building consumer awareness.

Environment Secretary Dame Angela Eagle today launched the Organic Action Plan for England, designed to support English farmers in the growing organic market. The plan outlines measures to expand the domestic market, including advice for farmers considering organic production and new opportunities to sell organic food in the UK.

The plan sets an ambition to increase the share of agricultural land farmed organically from approximately 3.4% towards 10% by 2036. Organic food sales are currently valued at over £3.9 billion annually and are rising.

The strategy focuses on three key areas: supporting existing and new organic producers and processors, bringing domestic supply closer to demand, and increasing demand for English organic products through consumer awareness and public sector procurement. It also aims to improve supply chains to get more organic products onto supermarket shelves and into restaurants more quickly.

What this means for you: For shoppers, this means potentially more organic choice on supermarket shelves, in local shops and restaurants, with more of it grown in England.
