Two-time US Open winner Naomi Osaka overcame a second-set blip to secure her place in the third round, defeating Katerina Siniakova in three sets. The 28-year-old Japanese star, who squandered a 5-3 lead in the second set, ultimately triumphed with a 6-2 5-7 6-1 victory.
Osaka's win sets up a clash with Belgian 23rd seed Elise Mertens. This achievement also marks the first time since 2018 that Osaka has reached the third round at all four Grand Slam tournaments in a single season. She also became only the second Japanese woman in the Open era to record 80 Grand Slam singles wins, following Ai Sugiyama.
Fellow former champion Iga Swiatek also made smooth progress in New York, with the 25-year-old Pole defeating Argentina's Nadia Podoroska 6-3 6-2. Swiatek, a six-time major winner, will now face Czech player Marie Bouzkova.
Meanwhile, American Madison Keys survived a significant scare, saving five match points against Hungary's Anna Bondar to win 5-7 6-4 7-6 (10-5).
