Brenda Fricker, the celebrated Irish actor who captivated audiences in films such as 'My Left Foot' and the festive favourite 'Home Alone 2: Lost in New York', has passed away at the age of 81. Her agent released a statement acknowledging her profound impact, stating, "We will never see her like again and the world is lesser for the lack of her."
Fricker made history in 1990 by becoming the first Irish actor to win an Academy Award, securing the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her powerful portrayal of Bridget Brown, the mother of Daniel Day-Lewis's character, Christy Brown, in Jim Sheridan's acclaimed drama 'My Left Foot'. The film chronicled the life of Irish artist and writer Christy Brown, who was born with cerebral palsy and could only control his left foot. Speaking to RTE, 'My Left Foot' writer-director Jim Sheridan praised her as "an amazing actress, amazing character, a forceful personality."
Beyond her Oscar triumph, Fricker gained global recognition for her role as the 'Pigeon Lady' in 'Home Alone 2: Lost in New York'. In the popular Christmas classic, she played a homeless woman residing in Central Park who forms an unlikely friendship with young Kevin McCallister, played by Macaulay Culkin, amidst his adventures in the city.
Born in Dublin, Fricker initially pursued a career in journalism, working as an assistant to the art editor of the Irish Times before transitioning to acting at 19. Her early career saw her take on a small role in the 1964 adaptation 'Of Human Bondage' and appear in Ireland's inaugural soap opera, 'Tolka Row'. She also graced the stages of prestigious venues like the Royal National Theatre and the Royal Court Theatre. In 1986, she joined the cast of BBC One's 'Casualty' as nurse Megan Roach, a role she revisited several times after her initial departure in 1990.
Despite her illustrious career and critical acclaim, Fricker had expressed mixed feelings about her Oscar win. In a 2024 interview with The Times, she suggested that the award might have inadvertently led to being "passed over" and "typecast" in subsequent roles, noting that it did not come with financial remuneration. Her extensive filmography also includes 'The Field' (1990), 'Angels in the Outfield' (1994), 'Albert Nobbs' (2011), and more recently, appearances in the Canadian TV show 'Cam Boy' (2021), ITV drama 'Holding' (2022), and Channel 5's 'The Catch' (2023). 'My Left Foot' is available to stream in the UK on Apple TV+.
