A massive fire has erupted at a railway embankment in east London, forcing over 100 firefighters into action as they battle to contain the blaze. The inferno broke out just before 6:30pm on 12 July 2026 near Vallentin Road in Walthamstow, with flames shooting high into the air and creating a 'significant amount of smoke' that's blanketing the area.
The London Fire Brigade has deployed an impressive fleet of 25 fire engines and approximately 125 firefighters to tackle the fire, which is affecting properties situated close to the railway line. As a result, local residents have been evacuated from their homes, with many now seeking refuge elsewhere.
Labour and Co-op MP for Walthamstow Stella Creasy has posted an update on social media, urging people to avoid the Wood Street area to allow emergency services to do their job without hindrance. She's also appealed for donations of food and water to be directed towards St Mary's Welcome Centre in support of the affected families.
The operational response to the incident has been a multi-agency effort, with crews from Tottenham, Bethnal Green, Walthamstow, Chingford, and surrounding fire stations mobilised after receiving over 100 calls from concerned members of the public. The Weaver Overground line remains partially closed due to the fire, causing significant disruption to rail services in the area.
At this stage, it's unclear what sparked the extensive blaze, but firefighters are working tirelessly to bring the situation under control and ensure the safety of all those involved.
