More than 70% of 19-year-olds in Great Yarmouth do not progress to higher education, according to BBC analysis of data from the Office for Students. This figure highlights the town's low rates of university progression compared to the rest of the country.
Among those choosing different paths, 18-year-old Jessica Flaxman became self-employed as a hairdresser after college, building her client list at a salon in Bradwell. Callum Payne, 19, secured an apprenticeship with Great Yarmouth engineering firm Armultra, valuing the opportunity to earn while training.
However, finding work can be challenging, as 19-year-old Reece Pasby is currently experiencing while looking for employment. Conversely, Olivia Ojeman, 18, is preparing to study medicine at university on a scholarship, as her asylum status means she is not eligible for student loans.
