The chair of the Parades Commission, Professor Evelyn Collins, has confirmed that she and her colleagues will not resign. This decision comes two days after a court case identified errors in the commission's ruling on last month's planned Orange Order parade to Drumcree church in Portadown.
Unionist parties and the Orange Order have called for the commission to step down. However, Professor Collins stated that they are committed to fulfilling their responsibilities and addressing the identified problems.
The Northern Ireland Secretary of State, Sir Chris Bryant, met with Professor Collins on Wednesday and expressed "serious concern over the issues highlighted" in the court judgement. Sir Chris has requested written assurances regarding the commission's decision-making processes, independence, impartiality, and plans to enhance public confidence.
The Orange Order has confirmed its intention to apply for another Drumcree parade in the coming days. Nigel Dawson, Portadown District Master, indicated the Orange Order is open to mediation with Garvaghy Road residents, though a residents' group representative questioned the point of discussions if the Orange Order had a "pre-determined outcome."
