Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes has stated it will be "difficult" for him to continue playing for his country. His comments follow a 10-match international ban and the retirement of Argentina legend Lionel Messi.
Paredes, 32, received the suspension from Fifa for his involvement in an on-pitch confrontation after Argentina's 1-0 defeat to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final. During the incident, he grabbed Spain's Eric Garcia by the throat, wrestled Gavi to the ground, and reportedly struck Gavi in the face.
The Boca Juniors player confirmed the suspension and Messi's decision as reasons for his uncertainty. "It's going to be difficult for me to stay with the national team," Paredes said, adding, "Because of the suspension as well, because of Leo's decision. It's going to be difficult for everything to carry on as before." He also noted he has not yet discussed the matter with coach Lionel Scaloni.
Lionel Messi, 39, announced his international retirement, stating he had "nothing left to give" after the 2026 World Cup final, which was his final game for Argentina. Messi, who captained Argentina to World Cup victory in 2022, is the country's all-time leading scorer with 125 goals in 207 appearances.
