The scorching heatwave gripping France is set to reach a boiling point this weekend, with Paris poised to endure its hottest day on record. Temperatures are forecasted to soar to 39C on Saturday and 32C on Sunday, prompting the Paris Police Prefecture to initially call for cancellation of all sporting events - including the prestigious Diamond League athletics meeting at Stade Charlety.
However, after a U-turn from local authorities, organisers have confirmed that the event will proceed, albeit in an adapted format. All associated activities for athletics clubs, licensed members, and regional competitions have been cancelled, but professional athletes will still take to the track this Sunday.
The event will be significantly condensed, with competitors facing a packed schedule between 16:55 and 19:41 CEST. To mitigate the effects of the heat, organisers have implemented various safety measures, including delaying the stadium's public opening until 16:15 CEST and providing an increased presence of medical services.
Additional provisions include misting stations, shaded areas for spectators and participants, and public information campaigns on heat prevention. Several prominent British athletes are still set to compete, including Matthew Hudson-Smith in the 400m and Georgia Hunter Bell in the women's 1500m. The event will be broadcast live in the UK on BBC Two, BBC iPlayer, and the BBC website and app from 17:00 BST.
The heatwave has not only affected the Diamond League meeting but also other major sporting fixtures in France this weekend. Saturday's Top 14 rugby final between Toulouse and Montpellier will see a ban on alcohol sales around and inside the Stade de France, while the under-17 final planned for 17:30 has been cancelled as a precaution.
