A trail of destruction left by a trusted figure has come to light, exposing the dark underbelly of a former police officer's dual existence. PC Alan Greer, who took his own life in May, is now revealed as a violent rapist who committed heinous crimes against women over an alarming 14-year period. The extensive investigation launched by Police Scotland has so far identified nine victims, but authorities warn that this number is likely to grow as detectives continue their painstaking work.
The earliest known victim of Greer's brutality was a woman who fell prey to his violence in her Glasgow home in 2012. What began as a report of another crime later revealed the shocking truth about the assault, only reported by the courageous victim herself last year. This pivotal moment sparked one of Scotland's most significant anti-corruption investigations.
Further digging has uncovered eight more victims, including five sex workers who were targeted by Greer while he was off duty. Chillingly, records show that during his policing career, Greer utilised the services of hundreds of prostitutes, fuelling fears that numerous other women may be out there, yet to come forward and share their stories.
Leading the investigation is Assistant Chief Constable Lynn Ratcliff, who described the findings as "truly shocking". She highlighted how Greer exploited his position of authority to commit these heinous crimes, often revisiting individuals he had encountered during his official duties. ACC Ratcliff credited the initial victim's bravery for sparking the investigation, which allowed police to proactively identify additional victims.
Greer was born in Australia in 1978 and joined Strathclyde Police in 2009, serving under the name of a different force before its merger with Police Scotland in 2013. Throughout his seemingly unblemished 17-year career, Greer initially worked as a uniformed response officer in Glasgow before transitioning into officer safety training in Coatbridge around 2016. His family and colleagues reportedly remained oblivious to his dark secret.
