A Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) has been widely praised for his swift actions in saving a toddler who was choking on a sweet in Bilston, Wolverhampton. PCSO Kenny Lewis, described as a 'true local hero' by West Midlands Police (WMP), utilised his first aid training after encountering the distressed family during a routine patrol.
The incident, which took place in February, saw toddler Roxy struggling to breathe while on a shopping trip with her mother and grandmother. West Midlands Police stated that the family was 'understandably panicked' as the young girl fought for air. PCSO Lewis quickly intervened, successfully dislodging the sweet and enabling Roxy to breathe again, averting what could have been a tragic outcome.
PCSO Lewis, a well-known and well-loved figure in the community, has served as a PCSO for 16 years, initially patrolling The Lunt before moving to Bilston. The force highlighted his consistent presence and approachable nature, noting he is 'always ready with a smile and a chat'. His long-standing service has made him a 'familiar and reassuring presence' to residents.
The family recently had the opportunity to reconnect with PCSO Lewis in the town centre where the life-saving incident occurred. They expressed immense relief and gratitude for his prompt and effective intervention, acknowledging the critical role his actions played in the situation.
This event underscores the vital role that police community support officers play beyond their routine duties, often being the first point of contact in emergencies and providing crucial assistance to the public. It also highlights the importance of first aid training for all frontline personnel.
