Xabi Alonso's tenure as Chelsea manager began with a high-scoring 6-4 win against Western Sydney Wanderers, a match dominated by the performance of four strikers. Joao Pedro was the standout, netting a nine-minute hat-trick at Accor Stadium.
Alonso described Pedro as "very, very hungry" and "determined to have a great season." The match also saw 17-year-old trialist Dastan Satpaev score the first goal of Alonso's reign after just six minutes. Satpaev's formal move from FC Kairat cannot be completed until 12 August.
In contrast, Liam Delap reportedly struggled again and could be sold, with Chelsea advancing talks to sign 35-year-old Danny Welbeck from Brighton. Welbeck has agreed personal terms. Chelsea are also in discussions to sign 36-year-old midfielder Jordan Henderson from Brentford, as they aim to add experience to the squad.
Alonso, who used a 4-2-3-1 system, stated: "We need balance, to have a complete squad and make a good team. For that, we have an idea and plan." Youngsters Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli, Reggie Walsh, and Reggie Watson also impressed during the game.
