Peru earthquake injures three, damages buildings and causes power cuts

A magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck Peru's Ayacucho region on Thursday, injuring three people and damaging homes, schools, and healthcare facilities.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.7 struck near the settlement of Aniso in Peru's southern Ayacucho region on Thursday, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). Local officials reported that at least three people were injured, though their injuries were not serious.

Peru's defence minister, Rafael Belaunde, stated that 22 homes and six schools were damaged. The National Institute of Civil Defence also reported damage to 10 healthcare facilities in Ayacucho and two in the neighbouring Cusco region, though services at these facilities remained operational. Approximately 9,000 properties lost power.

The earthquake occurred at around 13:00 local time (18:00 GMT) at a depth of 62 miles (100km), approximately 19 miles (31km) north-west of Aniso. Tremors were reportedly felt across large parts of the country, including in the capital, Lima, which is about 300 miles (482km) away. The Geophysical Institute of Peru recorded the earthquake with a magnitude of 7.2.
