A House of Lords environment and climate change committee report has highlighted strong evidence that medications used to treat pet parasites, such as fleas and ticks, are entering the environment. Scientists commenting on the report suggest these compounds may have unintended consequences for aquatic invertebrates and other species.
Professor Oliver Jones from RMIT University described the evidence for these medications entering the environment as "very strong," though he noted the consequences are "less clear." He added that while the risk to humans and pets is low, it is possible these compounds could harm the environment.
Professor Guy Woodward of Imperial College London stated that laboratory studies show these chemicals can negatively impact growth, development, and reproduction in many species, particularly sensitive invertebrates that form the core of freshwater food webs. He noted that imidacloprid and fipronil, found in some pet parasite medicines, are already banned for outdoor agricultural use due to environmental threats.
Professor Leon Barron, also from Imperial College London, explained that thousands of water samples across UK waterways consistently show these products posing the "worst risk to aquatic life." He indicated that the majority of contamination comes from household wastewater, as the products wash off pets and surfaces, ending up down the drain. Wastewater treatment is often ineffective at removing some of these compounds.
Professor Hany Elsheikha from the University of Nottingham emphasised the need for more judicious use of parasiticides. He highlighted the trade-off between preventing animal suffering and public health risks, and concerns over environmental contamination and unnecessary chemical exposure.
