Swiss architect Peter Zumthor, 83, has completed his latest project in Basel, a £110m addition to the Beyeler Foundation. This marks his first project in his home town, six decades after his apprenticeship.
The extension includes a monolithic new gallery constructed from layers of pale, crumbly concrete, along with a five-storey, timber-clad office and art-handling block, and an auditorium pavilion. The auditorium is designed as an open public lounge, accessible without a ticket, to serve as a social space.
The Beyeler Foundation acquired the adjacent Iselin-Weber park, which has doubled the size of the museum campus. Zumthor was selected for the project in 2016 from a shortlist of 11 architects.
