Over 600 people queued at a pop-up event on Bridge Street, Peterborough, to collect free second-hand school uniforms. The initiative aimed to help parents manage the financial stress of budgeting for the new academic year.
Parents could donate or take home various items, including coats, blazers, and prom dresses. One parent, Hannah, 30, noted that branded school uniforms significantly impact family budgets, stating she saves money before the summer holidays to prepare for these costs.
Victoria, 33, also highlighted the need for new clothes for her five-year-old daughter who has grown quickly. She described herself as "quite savvy" and said such free events help reduce expenses during school holidays.
Cristina Fernandez-Hierro from Peterborough City Council said the event helps reduce waste and empowers people by allowing them to contribute to the community. Roland Burt, a local artist and volunteer, is working to establish a permanent uniform hub in the city, an idea supported by Chris Wiggin, Peterborough City Council's member for the environment, who confirmed the authority is exploring options for a year-round space.
