A Peterborough headteacher has highlighted that allowing children to select their own reading material is a key factor in improving literacy rates. St Augustine's Junior School has promoted a love of reading through activities such as making book covers and recording book reviews.
In 2026, 77% of children at St Augustine's achieved the expected reading rate, which is above the national average of 75%. Peterborough had previously scored below the national average for English rates.
The year 2026 is designated as the National Year of Reading, an initiative established by the Department for Education and the National Literacy Trust to enhance reading rates. This initiative has involved working in cities like Peterborough, with support from Peterborough City Council.
However, Peterborough City Council has recently faced financial pressures and consulted on the potential closure of several smaller local libraries, including Woodston library, which is near St Augustine's school and used by pupils.
