Phase 1 Results for 'Fridge-Free' Tetanus-Diphtheria Vaccine Published

Scientists have published phase 1 results from a trial of a new tetanus-diphtheria vaccine candidate, SPVX02, which is designed to be stored at temperatures up to 30°C. This differs from most vaccines, which typically require refrigeration.

The study, published in eClinicalMedicine, investigated the safety and immune response of SPVX02 in 60 healthy adult volunteers. The trial compared the new 'fridge-free' vaccine candidate with licensed tetanus-diphtheria vaccines.

SPVX02 was developed by the UK-based biotech company Stablepharma. The trial was conducted at the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Clinical Research Facility at University Hospital Southampton.

Why this matters: Around half of vaccines globally are wasted annually due to temperature changes during storage and transport. A fridge-free vaccine could potentially reduce this wastage, improve access to vaccination in isolated communities, and decrease energy consumption and emissions from refrigeration.
