Photographer captures large American bullfrog in Michigan

Steven Scott Grogin took the photo of the bullfrog on an early-morning hike by a lake in Michigan, where he spotted the unusually large amphibian.

  • The bullfrog was around six to eight inches long and very hefty.
  • Grogin took the photo by dipping his lens below the waterline to get the shot.
  • The bullfrog is a predator, but also very skittish, making it difficult to get close.

Photographer Steven Scott Grogin describes his mornings in Michigan as a ritual. He wakes up at 6am on the dot to get ready for a hike. His favourite lake, once a quarry pit, is a 30-minute walk away, so he tends to arrive by around 7am.

As he circled the lake's perimeter, he saw this American bullfrog in the water. Grogin hoped the animal might naturally drift closer to the shore. Once it did, he set to work.

Grogin stayed into the late afternoon before returning home to make subtle edits. He hopes his picture will recreate the same sense of immersion for viewers, 'as if they're floating in the water, too, face to face with a world they would usually only look down at from above.'
