French photographer Olivier Lei, now a resident of Barcelona, has unveiled a unique photograph that provides a fresh take on a familiar city landmark. The image, captured on his phone, prominently features his brand-new loafers, artfully positioned on a bar stool within a well-known local establishment. The colourful, rotated shot offers a distinctive perspective, a departure from typical tourist imagery.
Lei, a full-time freelance photographer, explained that he had spent several hours traversing the city with his phone, actively seeking out potential photographic opportunities. Usually, his explorations involve him wearing white trainers or Vans, practical footwear for extensive walking. However, on this particular occasion, he had opted for his new loafers, which ultimately became the focal point of his acclaimed image.
The moment of inspiration struck as Lei was served his 'una caña', a small beer, prompting him to put his feet up on a nearby bar stool. This spontaneous act led to the creation of the photograph, which he suggests will be instantly recognisable to anyone familiar with Barcelona's vibrant bar scene. His comment, 'If you know Barcelona, you’ll know this place,' underscores the iconic nature of the location.
This photograph highlights Lei's ability to find artistic beauty in everyday moments and settings, utilising the accessibility of a phone camera to capture an intimate yet widely relatable scene. It also subtly showcases the shift in his personal style, moving from practical work attire to a more relaxed, perhaps even celebratory, choice of footwear for his city explorations.
