A routine test flight turned into a unique spectacle when a pilot conducting a test over north-west England chose to express his boredom with a very public message - 'I'm bored' was skywritten in bold, seven-letter letters across the Dee Estuary. The unusual display was captured on Flight Radar 24 and quickly went viral on social media.
The Ravenair aircraft, a Piper Tomahawk, took off from Liverpool at 11:25 AM on a recent Saturday. Its two-hour flight path spanned areas including the Wirral, Cheshire, and North Wales before the pilot spent around 20 minutes crafting the message over waters between Talacre and Greenfield. The skywriting occurred at an altitude of approximately 1,100 feet, with speeds just under 100 knots.
Wayne Barrett, operations manager for Ravenair, confirmed that the pilot was a flying instructor in his twenties. He explained that the flight's primary objective - testing a newly replaced part believed to be a cylinder on the aircraft - had been achieved despite the unauthorised detour for skywriting. Mr Barrett stated that disciplinary action would not be taken against the pilot, acknowledging the impressive skill required for such precise aerial penmanship.
Mr Barrett noted that the flight path for the message was not approved, but added, “I think the pilot was literally a bit bored, as it was just a test flight. It was pretty skilful flying.” The plane has since returned safely to its hangar and the pilot had a scheduled day off following the flight.
The incident showcases the blend of technical necessity and human expression, highlighting a pilot's ability to balance critical flight parameters with creative flair. What may have started as boredom for the pilot, turned into an impressive display of airborne artistry.
