Pinterest AI turns beauty Pins into salon action plans

Pinterest has shown off Beauty Guides, an AI feature that translates hair and nail Pins into salon terminology with estimated costs, appointment times and maintenance needs.

  • Beauty Guides is powered by Pinterest Intelligence, the company's visual intelligence and generative AI technology.
  • The feature translates Pins into stylist terms such as balayage, root melt and almond nails.
  • At launch it works across Pins related to hairstyle, colour, nail shape and finish.

Pinterest on Tuesday showed off a new feature that uses AI to turn saved beauty inspiration into plans users can take to the salon. The feature, called Beauty Guides, is powered by the company's visual intelligence and generative AI technology, Pinterest Intelligence.

Beauty Guides translates Pins into terms and phrases used by stylists and nail artists that everyday users may not know, such as balayage, root melt or almond nails. It also offers information to help users plan a visit, including how long each part of the process may take and the cost.

The guides appear when a user taps the Get the Guide button within the app. They then offer details about what to ask for to achieve the same look, the time it takes, price range and maintenance requirements, such as how often a user may need to trim, tone or touch up.

At launch, the feature will work across Pins related to hairstyle, colour, nail shape and finish.

Why this matters: The feature slots into an existing habit of bringing a photo of inspiration to the salon, and having the right terminology can help users discuss what parts of a look they want to edit or change.

What this means for you: Users can tap Get the Guide in the Pinterest app to see what to ask for, the time it takes, price range and maintenance requirements for a beauty look.
