Pirelli, the Italian tyre manufacturer, has confirmed its role as Formula 1's sole tyre supplier will continue until the conclusion of the 2028 season. The agreement sees a one-year extension added to their most recent contract, which was originally set to run from 2025 to 2027.
This extension was exercised as an option within the existing deal, mutually agreed upon by the sport's governing body, the FIA, commercial rights holder Formula 1, and Pirelli itself. The company first became the exclusive tyre provider for F1 in 2011, a partnership that has now spanned over a decade and a half.
Mohammed Ben Sulayem, President of the FIA, highlighted Pirelli's long-standing contribution, stating the company has consistently delivered high standards in performance, innovation, and safety. He added that the extension provides essential stability for the championship, a sentiment echoed by Formula 1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali, who praised Pirelli's technical expertise and focus on sustainability.
The decision to extend comes after Pirelli successfully secured its current contract against a rival bid from Japanese manufacturer Bridgestone. At the time of that agreement, there was speculation that it might be Pirelli's final term. However, while interest from other companies for future contracts is anticipated, sources suggest Pirelli remains open to the possibility of continuing its involvement beyond 2028.
Any future tyre supply deals would necessitate a tender process initiated by the FIA. Interested manufacturers would submit technical proposals to the FIA for assessment, before Formula 1 engages in commercial negotiations to determine the ultimate contract recipient.
