Former World Cup winner Andrea Pirlo has confirmed he is no longer a candidate to become the next head coach of the Italy national football team. The announcement, made by Pirlo via Instagram on Monday, follows significant political pressure in Italy over his commercial relationship with a Russian betting firm.
Several Italian politicians had voiced strong objections to Pirlo's role as an ambassador for Fonbet, arguing that the national team coach should not be associated with a company from a nation at war with Ukraine, a country Italy actively supports. Pirlo, who had reportedly been prepared to leave his current coaching position with Dubai United to take the Italy job, defended his agreement, stating it was "exclusively for commercial and sports" purposes and directly linked to his UAE role. He added that attributing political significance to the collaboration was misrepresenting his beliefs.
The search for a new Italy coach began in April after Gennaro Gattuso departed by mutual consent following the team's failure to qualify for a third consecutive World Cup, losing a play-off to Bosnia and Herzegovina. Pirlo had emerged as a leading contender for the coveted position after initial targets like Carlo Ancelotti and Pep Guardiola reportedly declined offers. However, his previous managerial stints at Juventus and Sampdoria, which were largely unsuccessful, had already made him a divisive choice among some fans and pundits.
With Pirlo now out of the running, attention within Italian football circles has shifted back to two familiar faces: former Italy coaches Antonio Conte and Roberto Mancini. Conte previously managed the national side between 2014 and 2016, leading them to the quarter-finals of Euro 2016. Mancini, on the other hand, famously guided Italy to victory at Euro 2021, defeating England in the final at Wembley, but subsequently oversaw their failure to qualify for the 2022 World Cup.
