London's Hyde Park became the scene of a unique world record attempt on Friday 10 July, as over 22,000 fans of the Cuban-American rapper Pitbull, affectionately known as 'Bald-es', donned bald caps for his headline performance at British Summer Time (BST). The sea of shiny domes, complete with aviator sunglasses and stick-on goatees, officially set a new Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of people wearing bald caps in one venue.
The bald cap phenomenon first emerged last year, with fans adopting Pitbull's signature look of a white shirt, black tie, and a bald cap at his concerts. This year's record-breaking event was the culmination of an eight-month campaign spearheaded by content creator Jack Remmington and BBC Radio 1 DJ Greg James, who encouraged ticketholders to prepare their costumes well in advance.
Amidst 30-degree Celsius heat, exactly 22,141 individuals were counted wearing the distinctive headwear. The rules for the record attempt were strict, requiring hair to be fully tucked under the cap and the cap to remain on for a full minute; naturally bald individuals, for example, did not qualify. The counting process was overseen by Guinness World Records' Will Munford and a team of trained volunteers.
Pitbull, whose real name is Armando Christian Perez and who is also known as Mr Worldwide, expressed his amazement and gratitude upon receiving the official certificate. "Who would have ever thought a first-generation Cuban would be able to be in London record-breaking and record-making one for the Guinness Book of World Records," he stated, adding, "We did it Bald-es, we did it Bald-es." The rapper is renowned for hits such as "Hotel Room Service" and "I Know You Want Me," and his iconic catchphrase "dale!" which translates to "let's go!".
The event drew fans from across the UK, including a mother and daughter from the Midlands who travelled to the concert already wearing their bald caps. Even an eight-month-old baby, Thomas, whose parents are dedicated Pitbull enthusiasts, participated in the record attempt, making him one of the youngest to contribute to the historic gathering.
