Plans for a £2bn development in Vauxhall Square, which includes what is set to be the UK's second-tallest residential building, have been approved by Lambeth Council. Councillors voted four in favour and three against the proposal.
The development, from Bmor, Cedarstone Capital Partners and Cheyne Capital, will comprise seven buildings ranging from two to 69 storeys. The tallest tower is planned to be 756ft (230.5m), making it the second-tallest residential building in the UK after Canary Wharf's Landmark Pinnacle.
The scheme is set to include 25% affordable housing, student accommodation, offices, a hotel, cinema, retail space, and community facilities. A publicly accessible gym and swimming pool are also planned within one of the buildings.
During the consultation phase, the plans drew opposition from Historic England, Wandsworth Council, and Westminster Council. Historic England stated the development would cause "incremental harm" to the Westminster World Heritage Site.
Mike Kane, an architect, described the development as "the worst example of unremitting hostility to the planet" due to its carbon emissions, reportedly averaging almost double the Greater London Authority's benchmark target.
