The BBC has announced the return of the children's programme Play School to CBeebies. The broadcaster has stated that the new iteration will retain the show's established mix of stories, movement, poetry, and imaginative play.
This development comes as some parents are increasingly opting for older children's television content, including shows from the 1990s. This preference is partly driven by concerns that some modern programmes feature rapid editing, vivid colours, and repetitive soundtracks, which some find overstimulating.
Earlier this year, the government released its initial screen time guidance for children under five, which largely concentrated on the amount of time children spend in front of screens. However, a professor of early childhood education, Natalia Kucirkova, noted this month that the quality of content is also a significant factor, suggesting that "good children’s media gives a child time to complete an act of attention," while "bad media keeps interrupting that act."
