Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has ignited a significant controversy within the gaming community following its announcement last week that it will cease the production of physical game discs for all new PlayStation titles from January 2028. The company stated the move is a natural adaptation to evolving consumer trends, as the preference for digital media now substantially outweighs physical discs.
The decision, communicated via a short blog post, explained that this transition would allow Sony to align more closely with how the majority of its community currently accesses and plays games. However, the news has been met with widespread condemnation, with fans and prominent industry figures expressing deep-seated concerns over issues such as game ownership, affordability, and the potential for purchased digital content to be revoked or removed from player libraries.
Acclaimed game creator Hideo Kojima voiced his dismay, describing the announcement as "really sad". He warned of the potential for titles to become unavailable and downloads to be removed from player libraries due to shifts in "nations, politics and various ways of thinking." Kojima emphasised the unsettling prospect of losing access to beloved games and media, stating, "If that happens you won’t be able to watch or play the games you like. That is what is frightening."
The backlash has been substantial, with a petition urging Sony not to "kill the disc" rapidly garnering over 165,000 signatures. Organisers of the petition highlight the tangible benefits of physical ownership, including the ability to lend, trade, resell, gift, or collect games. They contrast this with digital licenses, which they argue represent a revocable rental of access, citing recent instances where purchased movies were removed from player libraries due to expiring rights agreements.
In the wake of the announcement, PlayStation's social media channels have reportedly gone silent for over five days, marking the longest gap in their account history. Their YouTube channel is also experiencing a flood of critical comments, reflecting the intense dissatisfaction among their fanbase. Many comments express anger and call for the company to reverse its decision, underscoring the depth of feeling surrounding this shift away from physical media.
