Plug-in solar panels are now legal across Great Britain, with devices permitted for use from August 27. The government indicates these panels could lead to annual household electricity bill reductions of up to £110.
The devices can be placed in outdoor areas or on some balconies and plugged directly into a home. Depending on the property, approval from a landlord, building owner, or freeholder may be required, alongside potential planning permission or listed building consent.
Energy secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh described plug-in solar as "a simple, affordable way for households to take control of their energy bills and start saving straight away." Joanna O’Loan, Energy Saving Trust knowledge manager, noted that while savings will vary, the panels offer more people greater control over energy use and costs.
Each plug-in kit can generate up to 800W, potentially supplying as much as 20% of an average home's electricity. The government states these panels require no installation cost and generate electricity without drawing power from the grid.
Retailers including Amazon, Argos, Currys, and Wickes have committed to stocking plug-in solar panels, while B&Q and Screwfix have also collaborated with the government on the rollout.
