Defence Minister Lord Vernon Coaker today confirmed an £84 million investment package for Plymouth, with £50 million from the government and up to an additional £34 million from industry and local partners. The funding is intended to position Plymouth as a national leader in defence maritime autonomy.
The investment is expected to create nearly 1,000 jobs and support 500 people into employment, including through a new National Centre for Marine Autonomy. This centre is projected to create 120 jobs and attract over 30 businesses focused on advanced maritime technologies.
Additionally, a £1.5 million 'Get Plymouth Working' scheme will help 500 individuals, particularly veterans and young people aged 18 to 25, find jobs in defence, advanced manufacturing, engineering, and construction. Around 750 people are expected to gain new technical skills, and more than 7,000 young people will benefit from STEM training. Over 400 UK businesses, including those in robotics, artificial intelligence, and autonomous systems, are also anticipated to benefit from the programme.
