Prime Minister Andy Burnham is scheduled to host French President Emmanuel Macron in Downing Street today, 2 September 2026. The leaders are expected to discuss shared challenges, including efforts to tackle small boat crossings, strengthening European defence, and boosting both nations' economies.
This summer saw the lowest number of small boat arrivals since 2020. To further address crossings, new French surge teams are being deployed, including 45 officers to Western beaches and an expanded specialist intelligence and judicial unit. A new specialist unit of 75 officers is also active in Northern France, bringing the total number of officers to nearly 1050.
Prime Minister Burnham stated that the progress seen this summer demonstrates what can be achieved through UK-France cooperation, but emphasised the need to remain vigilant against criminal gangs. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood noted that over 48,000 crossing attempts have been prevented and small boat crossing numbers are down.
Other topics for discussion include Europe's support for Ukraine, efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and deepening UK-EU relations. The Prime Minister is also expected to highlight the importance of working with Europe to boost the British economy.
