Prime Minister Andy Burnham is set to signal his willingness to consider reviewing the state pension triple lock to fund a national care service. Speaking at the Labour conference, he is expected to state his readiness to make difficult arguments to address issues like social care.
Government sources suggest the Prime Minister will indicate a review of the policy rather than a commitment to scrap it entirely. However, Unite general secretary Sharon Graham called such a move “electoral suicide,” warning it would likely face criticism from the Conservatives and Reform.
In his speech, Mr Burnham will promise “an honest conversation” with the public, stating, “Hope comes from honesty and from saying the things politicians usually avoid.” Labour’s deputy leader, Lucy Powell, affirmed the party's commitment to the triple lock, noting its inclusion in their manifesto and its benefits for pensioners.
