The UK Government has announced a significant strategic shift, placing Artificial Intelligence at the core of its operations with the launch of a new Prime Minister's AI Taskforce. Lord Vallance, a distinguished figure in science and public service, has been appointed as its Chair, reporting directly to Prime Minister Andy Burnham. The Taskforce's primary objective is to harness AI's potential to drive economic growth, enhance prosperity, and fundamentally transform public services across the country.
AI Minister Kanishka Narayan will lead the Taskforce, which will also see him attend Cabinet, underscoring the high-level commitment to this technological agenda. The new unit will be based within the Office for the Prime Minister and the Cabinet (OPMC), working alongside No.10 and core Cabinet Office functions. This structure is designed to emulate the success of previous empowered units, such as the Vaccines Taskforce, which demonstrated the effectiveness of direct accountability to the Prime Minister in achieving substantial outcomes.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham emphasised the transformative potential of AI, stating that it is rapidly changing the world and must work for everyone. He expressed his ambition for AI to power a new industrial revolution, fostering growth in every region of the UK. Lord Vallance's extensive background, including his tenure as the UK’s Government Chief Scientific Adviser from 2018 to 2023, is seen as crucial for guiding this initiative. His role will involve ensuring strong collaboration between government, academia, and industry.
Minister Narayan highlighted AI's potential as one of the most significant technologies in human history, explaining its elevation to the Cabinet table will enable the UK to reindustrialise, enhance national security, and bolster public services. The Taskforce will focus on directing and implementing the government's overall AI strategy, including leading on the adoption of AI across the public sector. Additionally, responsibility for the existing AI Security Institute will now fall under the OPMC.
Beyond his role with the AI Taskforce, Lord Vallance has also been appointed Chair of the Oxford-Cambridge Growth Corridor. This initiative aims to foster innovation and remove barriers to growth through partnerships with local government, businesses, and academic institutions. This dual appointment signals a comprehensive strategy to integrate scientific and technological advancement into the UK's economic and public service frameworks.
