As Prime Minister Keir Starmer embarks on his final week in office, he has chosen Kyiv as the destination for a poignant farewell visit. Arriving today, Thursday 16 July 2026, Mr Starmer's presence underscores the UK's unwavering commitment to Ukraine's sovereignty and freedom – a cornerstone of his government's foreign policy over the past two years.
During his tenure, Prime Minister Starmer has been instrumental in mobilising international support for Ukraine. He co-founded and led the Coalition of the Willing, a 34-nation group dedicated to supporting peace through robust security guarantees. The UK, alongside Germany, also assumed leadership of the Ukraine Defence Contact Group, coordinating international military donations that have generated over $85 billion in pledges since early 2025.
Mr Starmer reiterated his government's "cast-iron support for Ukraine," paying tribute to the resilience of the Ukrainian people in the face of what he described as "even more reckless Russian aggression in recent weeks." He highlighted the UK's substantial contributions, including confirming £3 billion a year in military support for Ukraine, delivering over 250,000 drones, approximately 8,000 missiles, and more than 350,000 artillery rounds since July 2024. The government has also spearheaded sanctions against over 1,400 Russian entities and individuals, including all four major Russian oil companies.
The Prime Minister reflected on the broader implications of the conflict, stating that Ukraine's stand has not only defended its own freedom but has also preserved European security. He emphasised the UK's efforts to put Ukraine in its strongest position yet to defeat Russian aggression and secure a lasting peace – an outcome he believes will benefit British families by mitigating the economic costs of the war.
This visit comes as the UK prepares for a change in leadership, with the incoming Prime Minister expected to inherit a comprehensive framework of support for Ukraine. The enduring 100-year partnership signed between the UK and Ukraine is intended to provide a stable foundation for future relations regardless of domestic political transitions.
