The echoes of war still resound through Kyiv, where Prime Minister Keir Starmer today paid tribute to Ukraine's unyielding spirit and its crucial role in safeguarding European security. Speaking alongside President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at a press conference, Mr Starmer expressed heartfelt gratitude for an unexpected award bestowed upon him by the Ukrainian leader, describing it as a "very meaningful surprise" and a humbling honour.
With four visits to Ukraine since Russia's full-scale invasion began – and even prior to that – the Prime Minister bore witness to the sheer devastation wrought by Moscow. He recounted deeply personal and harrowing experiences, including his first visit to Bucha where he met community members who had to recover family members shot with their hands tied behind their backs, and witnessed a mass grave. He also shared memories of meeting doctors, nurses (including some from the UK), and veterans recovering from severe injuries, describing the "human toll" of the conflict as unforgettable.
Despite the widespread destruction, Mr Starmer underlined the extraordinary fortitude of the Ukrainian people. He described Ukraine as a nation with an "iron will" that refuses to be cowed, one that has become "more certain of its own destiny" and stronger than ever before. The Prime Minister highlighted Ukraine's success in not only halting one of the world's largest armies but also driving them back, a feat he noted defied early predictions that the conflict would last only weeks.
Challenging the notion that Ukraine is a burden on European security, Mr Starmer firmly stated, "Ukraine’s stand has preserved European security." He lauded the country's armed forces as among the "most battle-hardened, tech-savvy, creative military forces in the world," asserting that Ukraine is now a net contributor to collective security. His remarks underscore the UK Government's continued commitment to supporting Ukraine in its ongoing defence against Russian aggression.
The visit and the Prime Minister's statements reinforce the strong diplomatic and military ties between the UK and Ukraine. The Labour government, much like its predecessors, has maintained a robust stance in condemning Russian actions and providing aid, reflecting a broad cross-party consensus on supporting Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity. The Prime Minister's personal reflections on the human cost of the war serve as a stark reminder of the conflict's devastating impact.
