Pochettino: Spurs should get 2016-17 Premier League title after Chelsea breaches

Mauricio Pochettino believes Tottenham should be awarded the 2016-17 Premier League title, following Chelsea's admission of historical rule breaches.

  • Mauricio Pochettino stated Tottenham should have been awarded the 2016-17 Premier League title.
  • Chelsea admitted making £47m in secret payments to unregistered agents and third-parties between 2011 and 2018.
  • Chelsea were fined £10.75m in March for historical breaches of competition rules.

Former Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has asserted that his Spurs team should be awarded the 2016-17 Premier League title. This follows Chelsea's admission of making £47m in secret payments to unregistered agents and third-parties over transfers between 2011 and 2018.

Pochettino, who managed Spurs from 2014 to 2019, stated, "We should win one title, one Premier League. We should have been awarded it." He argued that Tottenham did not compete under the same rules, suggesting that with different regulations, they might have signed players to improve the team.

Chelsea, who finished seven points ahead of Pochettino's Spurs in 2016-17, were fined £10.75m in March after being charged by the Premier League for historical breaches. The club's current owners, Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, self-reported 74 breaches of Football Association rules when they purchased the club in 2022. A six-point deduction for Chelsea was "set aside" on appeal.
