Police Scotland's South Lanarkshire Division has been thrown into crisis after two officers were deliberately targeted in an attempted murder on Glen Avenue, Larkhall, on Saturday, 24 July 2026. At approximately 2:10 PM, a white Renault Traffic van was driven at the officers, who were conducting door-to-door enquiries at a property, causing significant injuries to both men.
The victims, aged 43 and 41, were rushed to hospital following the attack. One officer has since been discharged and is recovering, while the other remains in hospital under close medical supervision. Police Scotland have condemned the incident as 'deliberate and despicable', describing it as a betrayal of trust between law enforcement and the community.
Chief Inspector Paul Doyle stated that such violence against officers would not be tolerated and stressed that their duties should never involve physical harm or intimidation. He confirmed that an extensive investigation is underway, with ongoing enquiries in the area and increased police presence to reassure local residents, who are being urged to come forward if they have any information.
The white Renault Traffic van used in the incident was later discovered abandoned on Kirkstyle Place, Glassford. Police have issued a description of the suspect, believed to be a white male around 6 feet tall, last seen wearing dark shorts, a grey jumper, and a beige baseball cap. No other injuries were reported during the incident.
Chief Inspector Doyle expressed his deepest sympathies for the injured officers and their loved ones, assuring them that all necessary support would be provided throughout this difficult time.
