A former chief executive's downfall has been laid bare by newly released police photographs, providing an unvarnished glimpse into the lavish lifestyle enjoyed by Peter Murrell, who was jailed earlier this month for embezzling over £400,000 from the Scottish National Party. The images, taken by forensic officers, expose a 12-year period of brazen theft, with Murrell's ill-gotten gains used to fund a series of high-end purchases, including a luxury motorhome and bespoke fittings for his home.
The Niessman and Bischoff motorhome, valued at £124,550, was seized by police on 5 April 2023 from Murrell's mother's address in Dunfermline. Despite being driven only four miles, the vehicle was fully equipped with kitchen supplies and luxury items such as Le Creuset cookware, an Alessi teapot worth £220, and Molton Brown toiletries.
Further images reveal a range of opulent purchases at Murrell's Glasgow home, shared with former First Minister Nicola Sturgeon. The property was sealed off during the investigation, with a tent erected on the driveway for processing items. Photographs show a fitted home library, partly funded by SNP funds, alongside a wooden library ladder valued at £943.
Other items documented by police include kitchen units and fitted mats in the hallway, although some more extravagant purchases, such as Lalique salt and pepper grinders bought in 2020 for £2,618, are not explicitly pictured. The released images raise questions about the whereabouts of these missing items, underscoring the extent of Murrell's embezzlement.
Sturgeon has stated that she had no "conscious memory" of seeing the motorhome, which was parked at her mother-in-law's address, suggesting it may have gone unnoticed. The discovery has sparked further scrutiny of Murrell's activities during his time as chief executive and raises concerns about the management of party funds.
