Police locate camp holding 19 abducted Nigerian youths, say it is mined

Nigerian police have located a camp where 19 national youth service recruits are being held by gunmen, but believe the area is mined with explosives, preventing immediate rescue.

  • Nineteen national youth service recruits were abducted last week in Imo state, south-eastern Nigeria.
  • Police Commissioner Audu Bosso stated that drones helped locate the camp where the abductees are held.
  • The camp is believed to be mined with improvised explosive devices (IEDs), according to police intelligence.

Nigerian police have located a camp where 19 national youth service recruits are being held by gunmen, but have stated they cannot move in due to the belief that the area is mined with explosives. Police Commissioner Audu Bosso said drones were used to locate the camp where the prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members were taken after their abduction last week in Imo state.

The exact location of the camp has not been disclosed by police, nor have those responsible for the kidnapping been identified. Omotosho Adewale, whose child is among those abducted, told the BBC that the kidnappers have demanded a ransom of 50m naira ($37,680; £28,440), which he stated he cannot afford.

The abducted individuals were travelling from Ibadan to NYSC orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom states on Thursday when their buses were attacked near Umunoha in Imo state. Bulldozers and armoured vehicles are reportedly being deployed as police prepare for a rescue operation.

Why this matters: The abduction highlights the security risks faced by young people undertaking national youth service in Nigeria and has renewed calls for reforms to the NYSC programme.
